Cleaning the Pantry

November 6th, 2006 at 03:40 pm

I am cleaning the pantry today. One of the jobs I absolutly HATE with a certain amount of passion. I wanted to do it yesterday but frankly I ran out of steam.
One area of concern...cereal. My kids change their minds and get sick of a certain brand so quickly. So I really need to re-evalute that. I also hate my pantry how it is physically set up. I have those awful wire shelves......I am going to sound bad here. I only think a man could of invented these. I really am thinking of putting woods shelves in there as soon as I can. ALso they are so darn deep.....it is really a dumb design. I guess when I built the house 17 yrs ago and I only had a one yr old ....I thought differently. Plus my old house never really even had a pantry-so I was thrilled to get the builders standard wire shelving.

So yes I am trying to work in the pantry and I am hating it that is why I am blogging. Time to crank up the tunes and get r done. Wish me luck----

Good luck, I hate that job too and I have wood shelves. My husband built our house. we put wire in spec houses, but I like wood!

Wonder how long cereal in a storage container would last? You might could try a couple of different brands and rotate them so they don't get bored? I know how it is, I had two kids who didn't like the same things for breakfast! P.S. I like wood shelves, too. My mother has put in plexiglass shelves for her cabinets, though, and I LOVE that idea for seeing into the back depths under the shelves.

the house we bought doesn't have a pantry, proper, but it does have one 6ft wall that is nothing but floor to ceiling cabinates in the kitchen: 6 cabs total! i use that for my 'pantry' and love that it has wood shelves that are only 12 inches deep. makes it easier to get to stuff in the back, IMO.

something that might work for actual pantry shelves: a plastic lazy susan from the dollar store. makes it easy to group like things together (say condiments), and it rotates so you can always see what's in the back.

I usually don't buy cereal, I really don't consider it to have any nutritional value as it is so overly processed and overly sugared, but on rare occassions I will, and we consider it a desert item. But I won't buy more until it is gone. If the kids want other cereal, my answer is always a firm, "No new cereal until the old cereal is gone." They get stubborn for a couple of weeks, but I outstubborn them and they do eat it.

Of course, if you depend on cereal to get the kids out of the house for school in the mornings, that's another issue, but they can always eat it or go hungry, I can guarantee that after a time or two of going hungry, they eat.

I just don't consider cereal all that convenient. It takes me a minute to fry an egg for my son, another minute to scramble an egg for my daughter (I do it on high heat, just watch like a hawk), a minute and a half to make multi-grain toast, which I usually start right before I crack the first egg. Pour the milk and I have spent maybe 4 to 5 minutes on breakfast. If they want they grab a banana or an orange. Okay, cereal takes maybe 30 seconds max, but they are always starving by the time they get to school if they eat cereal.

LuckyRobin I agree. I have had some cereal around for my son mostly who eats it as a snack during soccer season. I def. notice since the season ended---less cereal is being eaten. We tend to go for bagels and toast with PButter. I also make big batches of pancakes. I refrig. the leftovers.
I teach a Bible class first period at school once a week. I was horrified one day when one of my girls walked in for the class....at 8:10am chugging on a huge huge bottle of mountain dew. I was really sad to see that. I asked if her mom knew she did that and she said yes....that was her breakfast. I quickly made her get rid of it. I found that shocking. I thought I was bad having coffee as a wake up now and again......but Mt Dew??? WOW
