Another Winter Blast

February 13th, 2007 at 05:36 pm

I woke up and got the kids going for school. packed lunches.....and then I got a call that school was closed. What a happy day to have all my kids up and ready to go at 7 am. I love my school but gee I wish they would not wait so late to make up their minds about school. I was happy that my son would not be driving in the bad weather but not so happy we all had to be up and wide awake--it makes the day seem so much longer for house bound children. We are expecting 4-8 inches with 8 more overnite!!!! It is very cold and the wind is howling all around my house! Winter is certainly here and staying for an extended stay.

I did have to go out and retrive 400 red carnations! I went to the flower wholesale plant and picked them up. I am running a Valentine flower sale fundraiser for school. I went right away this morning, but it was terrible driving. Cars and trucks were spun out everywhere and wrecks galore. Praise the Lord I made it home safe. I got home in time to put a roaster chicken in the crocky pot.
It is sure a blessing to have a nice somewhat full pantry and freezer for days like today.

So the house is full to the brim with red flowers that were supposed to go right to school....oh well I will enjoy the smells of spring and Valentines Day! I am almost sure we will not have class on Weds either...if so we will make Valentines Day a day later!

I got my heat/gas bill yesterday. It was out of this world as far as price goes. I am shocked to say the least. I have the heat down so much of the time and I hang wet laundry as much as possible. I am very dismayed. Is it from all the showers or dishwasher??? Not sure but it seems high. I am so very frugal I thought.....what must my neighbors be paying! I did feel like my frugal ways were not so frugal and maybe it was all for naught. I quickly changed my mind deciding it could of been alot worse. Well hopefully we can continue to be frugal in this area and then hopefully spring will arrive and the days will be more pleasant. I long for the day when the porch furniture is back out on the porch and the windows are open blowing the curtains in a spring-like window dance.

Have a good Tuesday everyone!

fern I like that one! I will write it in my journal. I keep a journal of lovely thoughts and quotes. I have since I was a young girl. It blesses me to be inspired in this fashion. Have a good day fern!

I can SO relate to your weather. It is snowing, again, in Colorado. There is a five inch layer of ice on my (downhill) driveway, and this morning I fell and wacked my head, and cut my hands in several places. I want spring, and I want to sit on my porch swing too!
I also have dinner in the crock pot, and will make some hot chocolate, later.
I know what you mean about trying hard to keep heating costs down, and then getting a huge bill. Wondering how much worse it would be without our saving efforts, is all we can do to keep motivated.
Make some popcorn, with those kids, and watch a good movie.

Front porch, do you have Duke Energy, or are you farther north?I was fearful that their prices would be higher than my previous provider and they didn't disappoint me. Ugh!

nance I hope you are alright from your spill! I know that I am very careful now that I am getting older. I fell in my dining room a few days ago. One of the children tracked in wet snow from not taking off their shoes....and then I slipped and wiped out in a melted snow puddle! on the pergo floor!! I hurt my arm on the top of the ladder back chair. I just wiped out so quickly I had no control of my body!

I am going to make a snack soon! Maybe popcorn or brownies. Everyone is working on the flower sale and getting the flowers labeled and candies organized for all the school children......the kitchen table and dining room table are little busy hives of activity! My 17yr old son is going nuts....he is very bored and is not happy with so many girls underfoot. We have tow other girls helpingus who do not live too far. So there are four girls and mom....lots of females! He tried to snowblow but the wind is too much and the snow is too icy!

Yes we must stay motivated to be frugal....it really does help to do many small savings here and there. In the end we shall reap a rich reward. I feel sorry for single mothers and young families who are really, really struggling....it is not easy and the burden can make one weary.

Ahh, I remember the high school carnation sale! Every year I hoped that THIS, THIS WOULD BE THE YEAR to receive a carnation from some secret admirer. It never happened. Oh well :-) I still survived!

I'm okay after the fall on the ice. Fortunately, I have a hard head!
I understand your son feeling overwhelmed with all of those girls around.
My son grew up in a house of girls too.

I wonder how close we live to each other! My girls are upset they are going to miss Valentines Day at school. I will have to see if they reschedule DD3's party. They are doing flower sales at the older girls school too! I can't believe you braved this stuff to go get them!
We tried to shovel, but you are right, the blowing snow was too much. I am glad I fixed up the basement before the weather hit, they are spending lots of time down there!

We always had chrysanthamums for our school's Valentine's day sale. I think carnations might have been cheaper.
