Movie Question

January 15th, 2007 at 04:49 am

Saw Charlettes Web tonight. Boy was that cute!!! My two little girls enjoyed it so very much. One read the book the other has not. All in all a great heartwarming family movie. I thought I would be bored silly-but I was not!

Question. I tend to take candy and drinks into the theater with me when I go. I do not purchase snacks at the movie theater. Is this wrong? I have thought all along that the refreshment stand is there for folks who forgot their snack from home. My kids and I will bring snacks from home to the movies about 95% of the time. I will admit it is usually placed in my purse and I do not make a big deal about showing off that fact. Am I teaching something wrong to my kids?

Just wondering and being curious as to other movie habits of thrify frugal types out there. I guess I have never felt badly as I know so many others who do the same...yet I was not sure if that was very wrong indeed.

I usually take snacks in - in my purse also. The snack bar is so dang expensive. Plus the popcorn is so salty you can't eat it.

I just don't think it's right for a soda and popcorn to cost $10.00!

So this frugal-ly is a snack sneak!!!

I've done the same. BUT, not at the theaters that have signs posted against it.

I don't think too many people think much about someone carrying in a water bottle anymore, but some theaters do specifically request that you not bring in outside snacks.

My brother used to work at a theater. He said the only place they actually make any money is at the concession stand. The box office ticket prices mainly go to cover the rental of the film.

I also heard on the radio once that the longer a movie stays at a theater, the more of a chance the theater has to actually make money on it. The amount they are required to turn over (percentage of box office sales) goes down every week so if a movie stays for a long period of time then they actually do make money off box office sales.

There used to be a theater that allowed you to bring in whatever you wanted but not anymore. Now'a'days I frequent the cheap theaters that offer slices of pizza for reasonable prices.

I don't have an answer to your question though about whether it's a good thing to teach your kids or not....

My husband managed a movie theatre for over 10 years and it is true that movie theatres make their money on concessions. We were able to get in free to the movie, but tried to compensate by purchasing a soda or a candy. Now we have moved so no free movies. The last movie we went to we did take candy in, but purchased a soda.

I think the important thing with your girls is to explain what you are doing and why...to save money so that you can enjoy the movie. I really don't feel you are cheating the theatre company. No one is obligated to eat at the concession stand if they see a movie.
